Widely recognized as CTV’s etalk anchor, Tanya Kim is more than just one of Canada’s most familiar television personalities. Raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Tanya’s passion extends beyond entertainment and celebrity culture. Classically trained as a pianist and dancer, this Broadcast Journalism (specializing in Television) graduate started her TV career at MuchMusic. She went on to become the music reporter for CTV’s The Chatroom, and then became the special correspondent for the first two seasons of Canadian Idol, reporting on music and style.

Tanya’s role as anchor at etalk has given her a slew of exciting opportunities, including hosting red carpets at the Academy Awards®, Juno Awards, Grammy Awards and reporting backstage with the artists at Live 8 Canada. In July 2007, Tanya reported live from London during both the Concert for Diana and Live Earth. In February 2010, Tanya had the opportunity to report on entertainment news from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games for CTV as well as for Olympic Morning.

In 2005, TV Guide ranked Tanya second in a list of “Canada’s Top 10 newcomers on the verge of a major breakout.” She’s also received two Toronto Sun Readers Choice Awards for Entertainment TV Reporter. Additionally, Tanya has been credited in the film and television world making appearances in Puppets Who Kill, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star and Glitter.

Recognizing the importance of philanthropy, Tanya supports charities that are close to her heart. She shares her love of music with Canada’s youth through her role at MusiCounts, an organization that provides instruments to schools across the country. She travelled to Zambia in November 2008 as national spokesperson for CARE Canada to help launch their “I Am Powerful” initiative, and is also a Director of Blessings In A Backpack, a charitable organization headed by Hilary Duff, that provides meals for school-aged children in Canada and the US. Recently, Tanya along with Ben Mulroney returned as hosts of Free The Children’s We Day youth empowerment events in Toronto and Vancouver.

Whether she’s at glamourous events in L.A., meeting high-profile stars, or gracing the covers of magazines, Tanya still counts her family as a source of pride and inspiration. “Making my family proud is what matters – my dad still tapes every show to this day! Without their love and support I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

Tanya Kim teamed up with Blessings In A Backpack, after seeing the need to feed the future of Canada. Tanya lends both her passion and her voice to the charity, while helping raise money and awareness with fundraising events across Canada, including her home town of Sault Ste. Marie.

Blessings In A Backpack is a results-oriented program designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal free and reduced meal program, and may not have any or enough food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behaviour, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

$100 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Following a donation, a school is chosen and a local grocer partners with the program to provide food for meals in the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

Blessings In A Backpack (BIB) is a non-profit organization currently feeding over 18,500 children in 16 states and now in Canada. The program is a hybrid of private sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools. We are feeding the future of North America, one school at a time.

Join our battle against hunger to improve educational success!

Become a weekday or weekend warrior in our battle against hunger. With your help, we can reach more students in more schools. There are four ways to pitch in: Adopt a School, Volunteer, Donate, or Fundraise.

Please visit Blessings in a Backpack for more info and ways to get involved.

Walk in Her Shoes

In the poorest communities around the world, women and girls walk to collect water, firewood or other basic necessities of life. They walk on average 6 kilometres a day - 8,000 steps while carrying the equivalent of a suitcase. This leaves little time to attend school, access health services or earn money to support their family.

To end the cycle of poverty, CARE is challenging Canadians to Walk in Her Shoes. Thousands of people across Canada have taken on the challenge in celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

Not too late to take part! CARE has extended the national challenge. Registration will now be open until June, giving you the flexibility to build your own challenge in a timeframe that suits you.

Register today as an individual or as a team and get your group, school or workplace involved in this national challenge:

Individuals & Groups Schools Corporations

Learn more, get fit and raise funds to help fight global poverty!

CARE is reaching out to more than 59 million people in 72 countries around the world every year. All money raised for Walk in Her Shoes will empower women and girls to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. You will help communities earn a living, access education, health care, clean drinking water and so much more.

She has the power to change her world. You have the power to help her do it.

CARE CANADA

As host of Canada’s most-watched entertainment newsmagazine etalk, Tanya Kim is a leading authority on music, pop culture and the entertainment industry. Now Tanya turns her attention from the celebrity spotlight to join CARE in tackling the roots of poverty in the poorest communities around the globe and to create a world where every single person, in particular women and young girls, can contribute to positive change.

In November 2008 Tanya announced a partnership with CARE Canada, a major humanitarian and international development charitable organization, to promote CARE Canada’s “I Am Powerful” campaign, empowering women and children in developing countries. Tanya travelled to Zambia specifically to generate awareness and gain first-hand knowledge of the strength and resiliency of women in the developing world. As CARE Canada officially announced its “I Am Powerful” campaign, one which specifically focuses on the potential of women and girls living in poverty around the world, Tanya embarked on a journey to discover how those strong women define the word ‘powerful’.
